Advice For SME's For Marketing On Twitter

February 14, 2018

If you have a small business, everyone will tell you to take advantage of social media platforms such as Twitter as a free marketing tool.

A ‘free’ tool is only useful if you know how to use it properly. There are some easy, smart ways you can market on Twitter.

Here are some top tips for using Twitter for your business.

Make the most of your Twitter bio. It should use your branding well, feature your logo, tell people what you do and provide a link to your website.

Use a light touch. Wit and humour do well on Twitter. We’re not all natural comedians, but the odd spontaneous comment or link to something that lots of other people are finding funny that is relevant to your business is a good idea.

Find content that relates to your business with hashtags, and retweet if it’s interesting.

Tweet often. You should tweet at least a few times a day. Again, scheduling tools such as Hootsuite can automate this process for you.

Interact with your followers. Followers often use Twitter as a customer service tool. If you can, respond as quickly as possible. If this isn’t do-able, it might be worth outsourcing your social media management to marketing companies that offer such services. If someone praises your services or products on Twitter, re-tweet the post and thank them.

Take advantage of whatever is trending. You might achieve the Twitter holy grail – content that goes viral.

Step back from constant marketing. A rule of thumb might be for every promotional tweet you put up, you incorporate ten ‘related’ tweets. Related tweets can include re-tweets of content you like, re-tweets of your followers’ posts, questions that allow you to interact with your followers, or comments on topical news stories that are relevant to your business.
